What is CELTA?

The CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is a foundational teacher training certification tailored for instructing English as a second or foreign language (ESL and EFL). Widely regarded as the premier certificate for English language educators globally, it is overseen by the esteemed University of Cambridge, renowned for its academic excellence. Recognized as a Level 5 Qualification by the British Curriculum Authority, CELTA adheres to an authorized syllabus.

For individuals with limited or no teaching experience, this intensive four-week training program serves as a gateway to embark on a fulfilling career in education. It not only opens doors to diverse teaching opportunities worldwide but also facilitates cultural immersion, language acquisition, and collaboration with colleagues from across the globe.

CELTA is specifically designed for candidates seeking to enter ESL teaching roles without prior experience. It equips you with the necessary skills to thrive in various ESL teaching environments globally.

Face-to-face courses

The face-to-face CELTA course offers a comprehensive and immersive training experience for aspiring English language teachers. Designed by Cambridge Assessment English, this intensive program provides participants with hands-on teaching practice, guided observation sessions, and personalized feedback from experienced tutors. Over the course of approximately one month, participants engage in a minimum of 120 hours of face-to-face instruction and devote additional time to lesson planning, language analysis, and assignments. With its focus on practical teaching skills and theoretical understanding, the CELTA equips graduates with the knowledge and confidence to pursue a career in English language teaching worldwide.

The full-time CELTA course is indeed quite intensive, although some descriptions may exaggerate its intensity. However, it’s important to recognize that the CELTA demands a significant commitment of time and energy. Participants typically need to clear their schedules for the entire month to fully engage with the coursework.

The CELTA curriculum encompasses a minimum of 120 hours of direct contact with instructors. Additionally, participants are expected to allocate approximately 80 hours to lesson preparation, language analysis, and research for the four written assignments required during the course. Despite its rigorous nature, the CELTA enjoys a high pass rate, with thousands of individuals successfully completing it each year.

Teaching Practice

Teaching practice is a central component of the CELTA course, emphasizing hands-on experience. Conducted in small groups with a maximum of six participants, this aspect involves instructing actual students at two different proficiency levels, typically pre-intermediate and upper-intermediate. Following each teaching session, there’s a feedback segment where trainees, along with their peers and tutors, engage in discussions about the lesson’s effectiveness. Additionally, both oral and written feedback from the observing tutor is provided.

Each proficiency level involves observation by a different tutor, ensuring diverse perspectives on teaching approaches. Individual tutorials are also scheduled to monitor and discuss trainees’ progress. Regular updates on performance are provided through feedback on teaching practice sessions and written assignments.

Input Sessions

Throughout the course, participants will also attend input sessions designed to equip them with the necessary techniques for their teaching practice. These sessions cover a variety of topics, including:

  1. Methodology: Exploring different teaching methodologies and approaches to language instruction.
  2. Language analysis and language awareness: Developing an understanding of language structure and usage.
  3. The learner, the teacher, and the teaching and learning context: Examining the roles of teachers and learners within various learning environments.
  4. Classroom management: Learning strategies for creating a conducive learning atmosphere and managing classroom dynamics.
  5. Teaching frameworks and techniques: Acquiring practical techniques and frameworks for effective teaching.
  6. Using course books and authentic material: Understanding how to utilize course books and authentic materials to enhance teaching and learning experiences.

These input sessions provide valuable theoretical knowledge and practical insights to support participants in their teaching journey during the course and beyond.

Written Assignments

During the course, participants are required to complete four written assignments, each ranging from 750 to 1000 words. These assignments serve as opportunities to delve deeper into the methodology and techniques discussed in the input sessions, drawing on background reading and research to enhance understanding.

Observation of Experienced Teachers

Additionally, to facilitate further development of teaching skills, participants engage in observation sessions of experienced teachers. These sessions include specially arranged classes taught by course tutors, as well as filmed lessons provided on DVD, offering valuable insights and learning opportunities.

Job Search and Continuous Professional Development

Furthermore, the course includes a session focused on job search and continuous professional development. Here, participants receive essential information about both the international and local job markets, as well as options for ongoing development after completing the CELTA certification. This session equips participants with the knowledge and resources needed to pursue rewarding teaching positions and continue their professional growth in the field.

Cambridge University - CELTA Certification and Moderation

Every CELTA course undergoes external moderation conducted by an assessor appointed by Cambridge University. This moderation occurs typically during the latter part of the course, where the assessor reviews trainees’ portfolios, assignments, and observes their teaching practice. Trainees have the opportunity to meet with the assessor to address any questions or concerns they may have.

The stringent standards set by Cambridge University for the CELTA qualification, coupled with the external moderation process, underscore the credibility and quality of the certification. These measures ensure consistency and uphold the high standards expected of CELTA graduates, contributing to its reputation as the premier TESOL qualification worldwide.

How to Apply and Pre-interview task

To apply, please complete and submit the application form.

The Pre-Interview Task

Designed to provide both you and us with an initial assessment of your suitability for the CELTA course, the pre-interview task evaluates the following:

  1. Understanding and structure of language

  2. Language description

  3. Language application in context

  4. Vocabulary and pronunciation

A weak performance on the pre-course task may impact your acceptance onto the course. However, admission to the course is not solely determined by this assessment.

Post-Interview Process

To secure your spot in the course, a deposit of 250 OMR is required. The remaining fee must be paid in full no later than two weeks before the course commences. Applicants who apply less than six weeks before the course start date are expected to pay the fees upon acceptance. Late applications will be considered if vacancies are available.

Please be aware: We primarily communicate with prospective candidates via email.

Furthermore, if you have already completed an application form and pre-interview task for a CELTA course at another Cambridge-approved CELTA center, we will accept these materials. A brief discussion may be necessary, but a second application and interview will not be required as long as you provide us with your application and letter of acceptance from the other approved CELTA center.

Preparation for the Course:

Pre-course Task:

Upon acceptance, you will receive a pre-course task designed to familiarize you with key topics that will be covered during the course. This task typically requires 8-10 hours to complete. While your responses will not be graded, this preparation will greatly benefit you, especially if you are undertaking a full-time CELTA course with limited time for extensive reading.

Enhancing Language Awareness:

It’s important to note that the CELTA course itself is not a grammar course; rather, it focuses on teaching grammar among other aspects. If you feel the need to enhance your language awareness, or if it has been recommended during the interview, we offer complimentary access to an online grammar course from Cambridge English. This course is specifically tailored for novice teachers and CELTA candidates.
